There is a trend towards consumer oriented virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift, affordable 360° streaming cameras like the GiroCam or the GoPano micro and high bandwidth mobile internet connections opens up possibilities to see the world through the eyes of another person. Imagine being able to view a hockey game live from the perspective of a player on the field or supporting a firefighter o
rienting herself in a complex environment by looking all
around her in real time.
In this project you will build a 360° remote presence system relying on commodity of the shelf (COST) hardware. Your task is to:
- Create a set of viewers and interaction techniques to explore remote streamed 360° videos
- Virtual Reality viewer for a COST HMD like the Oculus Rift
- Web-based Viewer
- Tablet Viewer
- Implement a streaming pipeline to support the efficient streaming from a mobile device with attached catadioptric lens (Android or iphone)
- Investigate feedback techniques to guide the remote user to navigate into a direction specified by the viewer
Ideally, you have:
- a strong background in mobile application programming, computer graphics, computer vision
- a background in distributed systems (video streaming) or knowledge how to utilize popular streaming libraries like FFMPEG
- motivation to work focused on the project
We will support you with:
- dedicated and close supervision
- access to all necessary hardware and software
This work is adaptable for master projects, master theses and bachelor theses.
